Unscheduled holidays

Letter April 04, 2015
Wasn’t the SIndh government aware of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's death anniversary while preparing the annual calendar?

KARACHI: I am writing this with reference to the public holiday announced by the government of Sindh on the death anniversary of the late former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on April 4. Do the relevant authorities realise that by announcing unscheduled holidays, they inflict mental agony on the public in general and parents, students and educational institutions in particular. Our insensitive rulers should have realised that the month of April is probably the most important one in the lives of hundreds and thousands of matriculation and intermediate students. The annual examinations are due to commence from next week onwards. With today’s holiday, school administrators will now be in a fix as they had to prepare for seating and logistic arrangements for the candidates. There are many colleges having their ‘pre-lims’ and with this holiday, the entire examination schedule has become topsy-turvy. With the announcement coming after working hours, a nightmare ensued for college authorities as they were flooded by a flurry of phone calls from parents and students while they hurried to reschedule the academic calendar. May I dare ask, humbly and meekly, the Sindh government that wasn’t it aware of the death anniversary of the former prime minister while preparing the annual calendar?
