KARACHI:

Sindh Minister for Information and Local Bodies Sharjeel Inaam Memon said on Wednesday that a well organised mafia was encroaching on state land and setting up marriage halls and other commercial ventures to fund terrorist activities.

“The land mafia is depriving the people of Karachi of healthy activities by usurping the playgrounds and parks,” he said.

Memon was talking to the media while supervising the demolition of illegally constructed marriage halls at KMC Sports Complex on Kashmir Road. Civic authorities razed to the ground Kashmir Lawn A, B and C.

The minister directed DG Parks to remove the debris and hand over the sports ground to the public so that they may enjoy the amenity. “This place was meant for sports and it will host sports events,” he said as bulldozers demolished the walls of illegal structures.

He said it was regrettable that the former nazims during their tenures did not stop illegal allotments of land that has led to many problems. The minister said that public servants found involved in illegal allotment of sports facility for marriage halls will be sacked.
