Commercialisation of residential areas

Letter April 02, 2015
Studio is also being run illegally on a residential plot

KARACHI: The house across the street where I Iive in Clifton, Karachi, as shown in the picture, has been taken on rent (or purchased, I’m not sure) by a private company. Upon asking who was moving into the neighbourhood, I was told that the private company is opening a TV studio in the house. This, otherwise, quiet neighbourhood is now bound to become a noisy commercial area should the studio be allowed to open.

There is another studio about 50 yards away from our house on the other side of Aunty’s Park. That studio is also being run illegally on a residential plot. One can see at least 10 to 15 cars and over a dozen motorbikes parked there. Residents of the area have stated that the personnel at the TV studio often cordon off the road to make commercials, etc., which is a nuisance to the residents.

I don’t want our otherwise quiet lane to become a noisy commercial street. This is not the reason I am raising my children here. They should be free to ride their bicycles and walk to and from school as in any peaceful neighbourhood. To ensure my rights are protected, I filed a stay order against the opening of the studio in my neighbourhood. I hope this will serve as a message to other commercial establishments to think twice before renting a house to open an office.
