Leaked audio tape

Letter March 29, 2015
Nowhere has there been any indication from Alvi that PTI or PAT workers have stormed PTV.

KARACHI: An audio tape of the telephonic conversation between Imran Khan and Arif Alvi has become a hot topic and some shocking, one-sided views and conclusions are being drawn. Alvi has not denied the conversation, but why do we forget that there was a great battle between the government and the PTI and the sit-in had unnerved the government. Under such circumstances, any minor news that seems to challenge the government becomes breaking news. Moreover, it would do us well to remember that protesters were not PTV engineers, and so could not switch off the transmission; this is a highly technical job and can only be performed by a skilled person.

Nowhere has there been any indication from Alvi that PTI or PAT workers have stormed PTV. Alvi used the world “people”, and did not ascribe any political identity to them. There is no point in creating more senseless issues when we are engaged in a war of survival. Our leaders must show maturity and stop scoring points by smearing one another. Lastly, we must remember that it is a crime to tape conversations in this manner and then make them public. Under the law, such an act is prohibited, and therefore, there is a need to institute a committee to find out who is responsible for recording the conversation. Technology has advanced so much that any conversation can be edited and presented in different ways. The sit-in was a reality and had nothing to do with the audio tape. The minister of information needs to concentrate on good governance to avoid future sit-ins.
