The best way forward for him will be to demonstrate neutrality in all his actions and decisions
ISLAMABAD: Raza Rabbani is definitely from a rare breed of politicians who rose amongst the ranks to reach the helm of affairs in the Senate of Pakistan. He is a politician of impeccable reputation and a true democrat. Unanimous approval of his candidature by the PML-N, the party in power, and the majority of the political parties in the Senate, for the coveted position of chairman of the Upper House of parliament, was recognition of his services rendered for the country throughout his political life. What was truly heartening to see was that even PTI Chairman Imran Khan appreciated his nomination as chairman Senate. Yet more noteworthy is the fact that Senator Rabbani was elected unopposed to this position. In the entire gamut of developments that took place vis-a-vis the process of nomination of the chairman of Senate, the point worthy of genuine appreciation is that the ruling PML-N ruled out the possibility of horse-trading and political bargaining in the election for this post.
By unanimously electing Senator Rabbani as chairman, all political groups in the Upper House have demonstrated incredible magnanimity and political maturity. All said and done, it is now time for Senator Rabbani to repay for the confidence vested in him by all political groups, which wholeheartedly supported his unopposed election to the position of chairman Senate. The best way forward for him will be to demonstrate neutrality in all his actions and decisions in conducting the affairs of the Senate of Pakistan. He will have to rise above party politics to attain this vital goal.
