PESHAWAR: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has, in principle, decided to take action against its dissident lawmaker Wajihuzaman Khan for violating party discipline.

Office bearers of the party said the MPA from Mansehra seconded independent Senate candidate Waqar Ahmed Khan and did not vote for the party’s candidates in the Upper House polls. Two PML-N lawmakers did not vote in the Senate elections held on March 5.

A senior PML-N leader told The Express Tribune Wajih resigned from the party, but the leadership is yet to accept his resignation. He added some influential PML-N figures from Mansehra do not want Wajih to be ousted from the party or any action taken against him.

However, PML-N K-P General Secretary Rehmat Salam Khattak said the party had earlier issued a show-cause notice to Wajih and also wrote a letter to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to strip him of his provincial assembly seat. Khattak added the party will now take up the issue again.

PML-N parliamentary leader in the K-P Assembly, Sardar Aurangzeb Nalotha, said he was not aware of Wajih’s resignation and only read about it in newspapers. He added there was no doubt that Wajih had not voted for the party’s candidates in the Senate polls.

Nalotha said Wajih had a commitment with independent candidate Waqar Ahmed Khan, adding the party should definitely take action against those who violate rules or it will use its utility otherwise.

On the other hand, PML-N provincial president Pir Sabir Shah denied reports of Wajih’s resignation. Wajih himself could not be reached for comments on his phone.

The MPA developed differences with the party leadership when Nalotha was appointed as the parliamentary leader in the K-P Assembly after Sardar Mehtab Ahmad vacated his seat following his elevation as governor. Wajih was then slated to be the likely candidate for the post but was overlooked.
