The use of CNG

Letter March 05, 2015
Wasn’t it the government in the first place which popularised the use of CNG as a fuel for vehicles?

UNIVERSITY OF KARACHI: Pakistan has a large number of CNG stations and has among the world’s highest population of vehicles that run on CNG. However, these days the CNG sector is going through a major crisis. In the beginning, the government used the media to persuade the general motoring public to purchase CNG kits and make their vehicles CNG-ready. Within a few years, thousands of people began using CNG as a fuel for their vehicles.

According to official figures, as long ago as 2009, more than 2.1 million vehicles in the country were running on CNG and there were close to 2,500 CNG filling stations. The present crisis stems from the government’s argument that CNG has been excessively used, to the point where its consumption now needs to be regulated. My point is, however, that wasn’t it the government in the first place which popularised the use of CNG as a fuel for vehicles?
