Value of libraries

Letter March 05, 2015
Keeping in view their importance, citizens, especially students, should use these opportunities to gain knowledge

SHIKARPUR: The American Library of Congress has more than 30 million books, the National Library of China has more than 26 million and the Russian State Library has more than 17 million books. It is a fact that even in this digital age, libraries are extremely important and irreplaceable because they can adapt to social and technological changes. Regrettably, in our society, most people do not prefer to visit libraries on a regular basis.

Modern society is heading towards an information society in which the central instrument of change is knowledge and information. Libraries collect, stock, process, organise, disseminate and distribute information and knowledge recorded in documents. They are a storehouse of ideas and inspiration for society at large. They provide various free services and programmes to their patrons and these have a far-reaching beneficial impact on the wider community. Keeping in view their importance, citizens, especially students, should use these opportunities to gain valuable knowledge.
