Sons and daughters

Catcalls, lewd comments and indecent advances are some of the problems women in Pakistan have to face

KARACHI: Too much emphasis is put on the way women dress and not on the men who ogle and sometimes attack them for the way they (the women) dress. Most women, especially those who are young, experience harassment on the streets at some point in their lives, regardless of the way they dress. When it happens, it can be upsetting, humiliating and degrading and if a woman wants to be independent, she has to learn to ignore it.

Catcalls, lewd comments and indecent advances are some of the problems women in Pakistan have to face. As for the men, this is their way of showing who is boss and of asserting their masculinity. We cover up our women, forbid them from leaving the house, put many restrictions on them, whereas the men are given a free rein. As a society, we consider our men to be above all laws of respect. This runs contrary to Islamic teachings, which say that sons should be taught the virtues of modesty along with daughters.
