GILGIT: The newly-appointed police chief of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B), Captain (retd) Zafar Iqbal Awan, has issued directives to the police department to swiftly implement the National Action Plan (NAP) drafted by the government in wake of the Peshawar school attack.
According to Mubarak Jan, the spokesperson for the police department, IGP Awan convened a meeting on Friday for the first time since he took charge last week to review regional security and ensure the implementation of NAP.
Jan told The Express Tribune the IGP issued directives to the police department to set up check posts at all entry and exit points in G-B and introduce a strict monitoring system to ensure terrorists do not infiltrate the region.
Headquarters DIG Inamur Rahman Malik, Baltistan DIG Inayatullah Farooqi, DIG Wasal Khan, AIG Waqar Shoaib and other senior police officials attended the meeting.
“IGP Awan directed the police to make foolproof security arrangements for tourists and foreigners working in G-B,” said the spokesman, referring to Chinese engineers working on various development projects.
He added in order to enforce discipline in the police force, the IGP hinted at the initiation of a reward and punishment system. “Those involved in illegal activities would be taken to task,” Jan quoted IGP Awan as saying.
According to the spokesman, sports competitions would be introduced in the police department to boost the morale of the force.
