No commitment to rule of law

Letter January 30, 2015
Adhering to the rule of law requires effective mechanisms to deal with breaches of legal and regulatory provisions.

ISLAMABAD: It is a painful reality that ours is a society where no individual or organisation has shown strong commitment towards the rule of law. Had there been even an iota of commitment to the rule of law in this country, individuals and organisations alike would have felt safe and secure. Karachi and other parts of Sindh, in fact, the entire country, would not have been burning and bleeding as is happening today.

Adhering to the rule of law requires effective mechanisms to deal with breaches of legal and regulatory provisions. Public sector entities and the individuals working within them should, therefore, demonstrate a strong commitment to the rule of law, as well as compliance with all relevant laws. Within this framework, they should also strive to utilise their powers for the full benefit of their communities and other stakeholders. The rule of law is also a means by which public sector entities and individuals within them can be held to account through compliance, with any constraints on resources voted on by the legislature. But in this country, who cares for the rule of law?
