We do not need Davos

Letter January 25, 2015
We need some real action which brings to an end the continued economic failure that the poor the world over face

JUBAIL, SAUDI ARABIA: It is winter again, which means it is the time when world leaders gather in the warm, cosy and luxurious halls of Davos, Switzerland, to discuss social and economic issues that their countrymen are facing back home. Has this not become an annual ritual to gather, discuss and depart to the real world? Are the boat people, who are dying on their way to Italian and Australian shores getting any benefit from the World Economic Forum meeting at Davos? Obviously, both Europe and Australia cannot afford this never-ending influx of, mostly economic, migrants. Both Australia and Italy are not accepting any more boats arriving at their shores, full of people who are risking their lives to reach the ‘promised’ lands. Boats are being diverted, sometimes to death, to other countries such as Indonesia, Malta, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea or directed to detention centres. Every other month, we hear of a human tragedy unfolding at the high seas.

Never-ending wars and civil unrest in parts of Asia and Africa, across the board corruption, accumulation of natural resources in a few hands, greedy and non-visionary leadership are also contributing to the continuance of this unfair world order. We do not need Davos. We need some real action which brings to an end the continued economic failure that the poor the world over face.
