Procuring a driving licence

Procuring a driving licence is tough because of the illegal demand for bribes

KARACHI: Among various other functions of the traffic police, the issuance of driving licence is an important one. According to my own personal experiences, and those of many of my colleagues, this is a most painstaking process. Procuring a driving licence is tough not because of any complex technical or physical ability required to pass the driving test, but because of the illegal demand for bribes and the rudeness of police officials. The process of licensing starts after paying the fees and the major hurdles that should come in your way are learning of traffic signs, visual ability, driving and parking skills. But one can’t pass this test, regardless of his/her abilities, if he/she doesn’t bribe the officials.

The authorities concerned — if they are competent enough — need to check this state of affairs as it can have severe effects on the overall infrastructure of transport management.
