The importance of our nuclear programme

Letter January 23, 2015
What the country is facing today in the form of the petrol crisis is the complete failure of the state

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to the cartoon by Sabir Nazar on the petrol crisis published in The Express Tribune (January 21, 2015), which seemed to view the crisis through an unusual lens, seemingly belittling Pakistan’s status of being a nuclear country. There is no doubt that the mismanaged petrol catastrophe in the country has completely crippled daily life. Several educational institutions have been closed and children are sitting at home. What the country is facing today in the form of the petrol crisis is the complete failure of the state.

Despite the numerous challenges that we face in the fuel sector, Pakistan has been flourishing when it comes to the development of its nuclear programme for peaceful purposes, specifically, the application of radiation and radioisotopes in the agricultural, medical and industrial sectors. Nuclear energy has always been a key factor when it comes to meeting the mounting energy demand and power shortfall in Pakistan. There is certainly scope to extrapolate the potential of nuclear energy to other sectors. Therefore, any attempt to view Pakistan’s nuclear programme critically is uncalled for.
