The boys, or I should say men, who make up the formidable Chand Tara Orchestra have certainly outdone themselves this time around.

The band has come up with a 'humble' rendition of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib's much celebrated tune Makki Madni. "This is praise to the Light of Cosmos!  May Peace and Blessings and Salutations be upon Him!" says a Facebook post by the band.

The Express Tribune's Rafay Mahmood gives us his take on the song below but for now we'll let the music do the talking:

Rafay's take: "Simply blown away by the sheer brilliance of ‘ Makki Madni’. It is not just a naat, it is not just a qawalli, it is a lot more than that. It is a magical spell, which for a good six minutes, keeps you enchanted and takes you on a ‘Secret Journey’ as Sting would have put it.

The rawness of Sherry’s hard-hitting vocals and the simplicity of arrangement and groove together are a testimony of sorts to what our country has gone through in recent times. It is more than just praise of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), it is a complaint from his follower, a follower who is unable to confront how much bloodshed has happened in the name of his beloved.

But in the end of it, it is the love for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his message of humanity that keeps the follower going in his quest for the right answers and that is what happens at the end of the song. You take off your head phones a holier person or maybe just a little low on the wickedness that the times have pierced into us.

Chand Tara Orchestra, your track has served its purpose everyone must listen to it regardless of whether they have listened to Khan Sahib’s version or not."

It was very bold of them to try and cover something made popular by the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Sahib. However to be fair, this track does not captivate you like the original does. It lacks the spiritual captivation of the original track. Derek Trucks Band covered it on an instrumental track and it captures the entire spirit of the track. It gets you spellbound from the first tick of metronome. Nevertheless it was a great effort and needs to be appreciated. Else we will just carry on producing clones of Atif Aslam and bollywood in our music industry.
