KARACHI:

The Women’s Action Forum has joined hands with civil society representatives, NGOs, lawyers associations and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) to stand against the establishment of military courts.

“We hold all political parties responsible for this betrayal of democracy,” said the forum’s Anis Haroon at a press conference on Monday.

According to HRCP’s vice-president Asad Iqbal, the civil society and political parties should be against military courts and martial law and it was time to condemn political parties who are in favour of it. A former president of the Karachi Bar Association, Salahuddin Ahmed, said that it was important to make things better instead of forming new courts.

Karamat Ali, the executive director of Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research, said that instead of setting up new courts, the government needed to strengthen the police and judicial system.
