Role of electronic media

Despite having great power, the media demonstrates zero responsibility

ISLAMABAD: In today’s times, the media has immense power. It can be used to change people’s minds. News channels, specially, are at the top of the list when it comes to influencing the public. However, despite having great power, the media demonstrates zero responsibility. Explicit content is often aired at times when many children are gathered around televisions sets. Viewing such images can be psychologically damaging for children.

Journalistic ethics were tossed out of the window by some reporters who went up to children after the Peshawar massacre and asked, “What are you feeling about your classmates dying?” What kind of questions are these? Have these reporters ever been given any training? Have they been told about the kind of questions they should be asking at such a tragic time?
