Democracy and education

There is need to understand that weak democracy, alarming levels of corruption result from abysmal education condition

KARACHI: Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget, who died in 1980, said, “Only education is capable of saving societies from collapse, whether violent or gradual.” Almost the entire world, save apparently for Pakistan, has been aware of the significance of education and its direct link with development and elimination of all malpractices in society. Pakistan’s budgetary allocation on education is below Unesco’s prescribed limit. Sadly, much below two per cent of the Gross Domestic Product is allocated for education in our budgets.

Many countries have realised the importance of education and are spending over the prescribed Unesco amount to improve their economies. Cuba has been spending the highest budget ratio of 18 per cent in this regard. There is a need to understand that a weak democracy and alarming levels of corruption result from abysmal conditions in the education sector.
