Safety for motorcyclists

Letter November 28, 2014
Safety on the roads is often just disregarded as a trivial civic issue

RAWALPINDI: Motorcyclists are seen to lose balance and fall while they are driving over the railway crossing on Jhelum Road, in the Rawalpindi Cantt area. This has now become a routine. The injured, including ladies and children, sometimes require serious medical attention. This hazard can be easily eliminated if a narrow passage is created for motorcyclists to cross at a 90-degree angle to the rail track. Such a measure will be completely in accordance with international standards.

One can only hope that the traffic authorities take concrete measures to prevent future fatalities on this important crossing of Rawalpindi. Moreover, it is also the drivers’ responsibility to ensure that they are driving carefully and are thoroughly cognisant of all traffic rules. Safety on the roads is often just disregarded as a trivial civic issue. It is much more than that; it is an issue, which can cost people their lives and should be taken seriously by the authorities and commuters.
