KARACHI:

In line with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's directives, the provincial government has constituted a committee to address public grievances relating to the alleged unlawful detentions and extrajudicial killings during the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi.

Karachi AIG Ghulam Qadir Thebo revealed this before a division bench of the Sindh High Court on Tuesday, during the hearing of a petition seeking the recovery of a man arrested by the police and Rangers. In his comments, the Karachi police chief said that the PM, during a meeting held at Governor House on May 14, had decided to form a Grievance Redressal Committee to attend to public complaints about the operation. The Sindh government issued a formal notification to form the committee. The provincial home secretary is the chairperson of this committee, which comprises the provincial law secretary, Thebo and a senior representative of the Sindh Rangers as its members.

The two judges said that Thebo's statement will be considered on December 18. They also told Thebo to hold a meeting of the police and Rangers before that date, to sort out a strategy on the operation so that no complaints were made from any quarter. "Let the needful be done within two weeks, whereafter the mechanism as stated by the AIG will be placed on record," said Justice Ahmed Sheikh, who was heading the bench.
