KARACHI: Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT and IT-enabled Services (P@SHA) President Jehan Ara expressed her delight at the level of diversity in the nominations submitted for the 11th annual P@SHA ICT Awards.
The 2014 edition received 128 nominations from across Pakistan including Peshawar, much to the delight of the association chief.
“We don’t want to restrict technology only to Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad,” said Jehan Ara as a packed house responded with a resounding applaud.
“We are happy to see innovators from Peshawar submitting nominations for the first time and ending among the top nominees.”
She said this while inaugurating the event at Movenpick Hotel on Saturday.
The P@SHA ICT Awards aim to provide recognition to software and service applications by providing them an opportunity to gain local, regional and international exposure; acknowledging creativity, innovation and excellence in Pakistan’s Information and Communications Technologies sector, says P@SHA.
The event was attended by leading dignitaries from the Pakistani ICT sector; representatives from foreign missions; government officials; academia and the business community that gathered in large numbers to laud the innovative achievers from amongst Pakistan’s ICT sector.
Known to be the largest event in Pakistan’s technology sector, the event is going to Lahore next year. However, the Government of Punjab was one of the sponsors for the Karachi edition, said the president, noting that the Sindh government was nowhere to be seen.
“As always, we received an overwhelming number of entries. We are pleased to have innovators from Peshawar join the list of winners, highlighting the pool of talent from all corners,” said Jehan Ara.
P@SHA Chairman Dr Shoab A Khan stressed the need for public and private sectors’ collaboration. “They need to join hands to ensure that this specialised field benefits Pakistan through high value jobs and efficiency of processes,” said Khan.
He said emphasis on research and innovation is improving Pakistan’s stature as a source of technology and creativity.
Panels of judges from Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad faced quite a challenge as they judged some of the finest software products and service offering from Pakistan. This year, the P@SHA ICT Awards announced 49 exceptional entries as the best innovators in the 17 product and 15 service categories, said the press release.
The winners from the product categories of the P@SHA ICT Awards 2014 will be part of the P@SHA delegation from Pakistan that will compete at the APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Awards) in Jakarta, Indonesia against 17 IT economies.
