Pakistan elected to UN's economic, social council

Pakistan has been elected to the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations for a three-year term beginning from January 1 next year, Radio Pakistan reported.

Pakistan secured 181 out of 193 votes of the members of the UN General Assembly to secure the seat on the council.

Pakistan was contesting for one of three Asian seats in the body. The vote reflects the prestige Pakistan enjoys in the international community.

ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the United Nations system.
