Whisked away: Industrialist recovered, five kidnappers held

Professor abducted; police clueless about his whereabouts

SWABI: An industrialist was recovered and five kidnappers were held during a raid in Ismaila area of Swabi on Friday morning.

Speaking to journalists at a news conference, Swabi DPO Sajjad Khan said Gul Bacha, an industrialist and resident of Gohati, went from Islamabad to Deh Khud to drop his brother on October 13. On the way back, he stopped in Swabi and withdrew $3,000 and Rs0.3 million from a local bank.



Gul was supposed to be heading back home, but his family was unable to establish contact with him on the mobile phone. The official said the family was informed about Gul being missing and despite several search operations the police were unable to trace the industrialist’s whereabouts.

However, the police raided a house early Friday morning after receiving an intelligence report and rescued the businessman. The DPO added that the money and vehicle of Gul were also recovered, while suspects Qasid Ali, Afsar Ali, Muhammad Khan, Muhammad Ali and Mansoor Ahmad were arrested. Nine cell phones and a 9mm pistol were seized from their possession. Further investigation is under way.

Professor kidnapped by militants

A professor of Gohati Postgraduate College was kidnapped by unidentified militants in Shewa Adda on Thursday afternoon.

DSP Kalu Khan Arbab Shafiullah told The Express Tribune Professor Qaim Khan, a teacher of Pakistan Studies at the college, was heading home when he was intercepted and whisked away in another vehicle.

Shafiullah said the police blocked all entry and exit routes of the area and started a search operation, but with little luck thus far.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students from the college blocked Mardan-Swabi road for more than an hour in protest. They demanded the immediate recovery of the professor and stern police action against the culprits.

Teachers also joined the students and chanted slogans against the government, saying militants were not even sparing professors now. The demonstrators threatened to launch a massive protest in the main square of Swabi if the professor was not recovered. They dispersed after blocking the road for one hour.
