3G & 4G

Once people become familiar with technology at hand, learn its usage, they will themselves put it to constructive use

KARACHI: I write in response to your report “Hike: 3G service users reach 2.5m mark” (October 11) published in The Express Tribune. The news item has correctly grasped the current trend amongst internet users and the figures quoted showcases a swift movement towards the recently launched high speed mobile internet services. As quoted in the article, “It is worth mentioning that it took Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around eight years to take the broadband subscription to its current 3.37 million mark.” People have quickly adapted to these value-added services provided by telecom operators.

Let me mention how the launch of 3G and 4G mobile internet services is a moment of pride for Pakistanis and a huge achievement for our government. It not only pushes Pakistan amongst the top 10 countries in terms of high-speed internet, but it also provides people with an opportunity to connect with the rest of the world. The growth prospects these services have enabled, for individuals and businesses, are numerous. It is now up to the government to continue its efforts in order to take full advantage of our potential through the mobile internet revolution. As mentioned in the news item, the number of mobile internet subscribers will continue to grow with the commercial launch of 4G services and the availability of affordable 4G smartphones.

I, myself, being a user of Pakistan’s fastest 3G service have found ways to put to use its thunderous data speeds, which helps me effectively manage my work life. I believe that once people become familiar with the technology at hand and learn about its proper usage, they shall themselves put it to constructive use because further growth in user numbers shall not really be of any benefit if people are not educated on how to use this technology for their benefit.
