Security in Muharram

Letter October 21, 2014
I feel that all places that hold majalis should be registered with the local government

LAHORE: The holy month of Muharram is going to begin soon. Before any untoward incident takes place, the government is advised to take appropriate steps. Out of my own experience, I have some suggestions for the government.

I feel that all places that hold majalis should be registered with the local government. Other than these areas, no zakir should be allowed to conduct a majlis anywhere else. Parking areas should be at a safe distance from the compounds of majlis areas, although the old and the sick should be allowed to be dropped off after due clearance and their vehicles should go back to the parking area. All the entry points should be well guarded and each person attending the majlis should be scanned and searched thoroughly. No one should take offence at this because it is for the security of everyone. Keeping in view the prevailing conditions in the country, the procession on Muharram 10 should be restricted to smaller safe routes. Armed plainclothes policemen should be deployed at all gatherings to keep an eye out for terrorists.
