KARACHI: As the death toll of those killed after drinking toxic liquor hits 29 in Karachi, the newly appointed Excise and Taxation Minister Gayan Chand on Thursday suspended two directors and four deputy directors in his department, Express News reported.

Further, licenses of the vendors involved are being cancelled as well.

At least six more deaths were reported today.

On Wednesday, 23 people around the city lost their lives after they consumed home-made liquor.

Patients have been admitted to Jinnah Hospital where they are receiving treatment. However, with eight patients suffering from kidney failure, the number of fatalities could increase.

According to the Medical Superintendent Seemi Jamali, 26 patients are still in critical condition.

As a result of the fatalities, the DIGP East, Munir Ahmad Shaikh has suspended five station house officers (SHOs) and SIO Korangi for failing in the case of death caused due to 'kachi sharab'.

An inquiry has also been launched against two deputy superintendents. He further ordered to lodge FIRs under section 302 PPC.

The deceased were said to be from the low-income localities of Karachi, namely Malir, Landhi and Azizabad.

Over 15 people lost their lives last year in Mehmoodabad due to consumption of toxic liquor.
