BATTAGRAM: At least 150 villagers were hospitalised after consuming adulterated food at a lunch organised by a PML-N MPA from Battagram, said hospital and family sources on Sunday.

PML-N MPA Nawabzada Wali Muhammad Khan hosted a lunch on Saturday. Food was served to over 3,000 villagers on the occasion. However, miscreants allegedly mixed poison in the food served to the last group of 200 guests.

The condition of about 150 villagers deteriorated half an hour after they ate the food. Villagers complained of stomach pain and severe diarrhoea, said those familiar with the matter.

Initially, the villagers used traditional herbal remedies to treat the patients. However, when the situation got out of hands, they were taken to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Battagram where they were provided emergency treatment.

According to Dr Khursheed, the emergency ward in charge, the patients were dehydrated. He said they had been brought to hospital on time, provided medical assistance and discharged.

Addressing the media, Khanzada Zafar Ali Khan, the former tehsil nazim and younger brother of the PML-N’s MPA, said someone had mixed poisonous substances in the food.
