In the national interest

Letter September 21, 2014
A further continuation of the stalemate is going to harm the interests of the nation.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Zafar Hilaly’s article titled “In the national interest” (September 13).

The tug of war has gone on for quite a long time and has drained the energies of the nation. The dharna people are claiming to express the views of a great majority of Pakistanis which we regard as the silent majority. The government, on the other hand, persists in maintaining that it is the elected representative of the people, no matter how fraudulent the election that installed it may have been.

The actions of the government over the last few days show that it is thinking of a crackdown and this is to be a disastrous move, which will only provide the much needed fuel to the dharnas.

The so-called ‘umpire’ till now has distanced itself from this conflict. But it is quite evident that the parties involved in the conflict are not in a position to come to any amicable agreement. A further continuation of the stalemate is going to harm the interests of the nation and ultimately the onus will fall on the umpire to take a decision. So I would suggest that this time these forces exert their authority and make the government accede to the just demands of the public.
