SHANGLA:

Three women and two boys drowned in River Indus in two separate incidents in Shangla district on Friday.

While talking to The Express Tribune, Syed Ajmal, an official of Chakesar police, said three women drowned around 1:30pm at Jat Kol. They were identified as Zarposhana Bibi, Sewa Bibi and Shamia Bibi.

The women were collecting grass near the river bank when Sewa Bibi went for a swim. She was joined by Zarposhana Bibi and Shamia Bibi. However, Sewa Bibi lost control and started to drown. The other women tried to rescue her but the strong current washed away all three.

The official added that Zarposhana Bibi was found half a mile away from the site where she drowned while the bodies of the other two women are yet to be found.

Meanwhile, two boys drowned while swimming in the same river in Besham. Amjad Iqbal, an official of Besham police, said Shamsur Rahman,12, and Mashaal Khan,16, were swimming around 2:15pm when they went under.

He added people nearby rushed to the bank after hearing a commotion but could not rescue them. Iqbal said the bodies are yet to be recovered while a search operation is under way. Locals demanded authorities to take precautionary measures and at least draw limits at the banks to prevent people from going too far in the river.
