Balochistan: NAB clears assets, graft probe against ex-CM

Also authorises five other inquiries into multi-billion-rupees scandals

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has authorised investigations into a number of graft cases, including one against Balochistan’s former chief minister Nawab Aslam Khan Raisani.


Raisani is accused of allegedly accumulating assets beyond his known sources of income — to the tune of Rs4.4 billion  — during his tenure as head of the province. He is also accused of misusing his authority and causing a huge loss to the national exchequer.

The NAB’s Executive Board Meeting (EBM), which was held on Monday under the chairmanship of NAB Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudry, also authorised five other inquiries and two investigations into multi-billion-rupees graft cases.

The EMB also approved filing of a reference against Fayyazi Industries Gujranwala Private Limited’s CEO Mufti Muhammad Ehsanull Haq, and 35 other accused persons in the Modarba case. The accused persons are allegedly involved in cheating by attracting general public to invest in Modarba business and looting Rs6.5 billion.

The board decided to close an inquiry into a case against management of a satellite TV channel for willful default and cheating the public at large as no criminal breach of trust was found.

An inquiry was authorised against Sher Afzal and Talat Mahmood – two former directors general and six other officers of Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation (FGEHF). In this case the accused are allegedly involved in illegal allotment and unjust cancellation of plots.

The EBM also authorized an inquiry against officials of ministry of religious affairs for their alleged involvement in corrupt in connection with construction of three towers by M/s Dallah Real Estate.

The board also decided to probe allegations of violating Public Procurement Rules (PPRA) by the management of Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGDCL) in the procurement of equipment for UCH-II Development Project, Dera Bugti, Balochistan.

The said officials are allegedly involved in illegally awarding contract to M/s Bellelli Engineering SPA Italy at a very high cost and causing a huge loss of Rs75.9 million to the national exchequer.

A fifth inquiry was authorised against Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) ex-managing director Tahir Basharat Cheema, who is accused of misuse of authority in appointments of 437 employees in Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco).

The EMB also gave the nod to probe against ex-MPA Malik Muhammad Rafiq Khar, who allegedly misused authority, forged state revenue record, and illegally allotted state land in his own name and in the names of his sons.

The board also authorised two investigations in Social Welfare and Special Education department and DI Khan’s ex-chief settlement commissioner.

After these references been filled the accused were found, relaxed and chanting Long Live Democracy.

They all know too damn well that nothing is going to happen against them.
