Bad job interview

Letter September 15, 2014
Interviewing officers do not have mandate to insult candidates, call into question their moral and academic integrity

LAYYAH: I was humiliated by the chief interviewing officer at Government College, Layyah. I went for an interview which was for the selection of young interns for the position of teacher’s assistant on September 13, 2014. I have recently completed my M Phil in English from Fatima Jinnah University, Rawalpindi. I was left humiliated after the question-and-answer session, because I was unable to answer some of the questions he asked. His behaviour was aggressive when I gave an incorrect answer to a simple question — ‘How many alphabets does the English language have?’ Even though I knew the answer, I got confused and answered 36 instead of 26.

In reaction to this, he started objecting to my degree and qualifications. I am not complaining that they did not offer the job, perhaps, I was not a desired candidate. But an interviewing officer does not have the mandate to insult a candidate and call into question his or her moral and academic integrity and commitment.

I request the Government of Punjab to kindly look into the appointment of staff for such interviews.
