Road closures

Letter September 14, 2014
The closure of Mai Kolachi expressway is a reminder to Pakistanis that they are still subjects of the US empire.

KARACHI: My journey to the office recently was nothing short of an ordeal. The first roadblock was adjacent to Bilawal House. This road was reopened after years of protest by civil society, yet has been closed for a number of days, because the Sindh government wills it. Next was the road adjacent to BBQ Tonite, which till September 12 was blocked at the Boat Basin end, till the police ended the protest by the teachers who had blocked it.

If that’s not enough, one side of a long stretch of the Mai Kolachi expressway — right next to the US consulate — currently stays closed to traffic. This is a daily reminder to thousands of Pakistanis that they are still subjects of the US empire and that that country can suppress their fundamental rights when it so desires in the name of so-called security. Mind you, this facility has multiple layers of concrete bars, steel gates and barbed wires and already occupies part of the road. Will someone please listen?!
