Recurring floods and their victims

Letter September 13, 2014
The provincial and federal governments should take steps to overcome flood-related problems.

KARACHI: I would like to draw the attention of the authorities concerned towards the issue of rehabilitating flood victims. The vehemence of revolution cries diverted the attention of the government from the plight of flood victims. Raging floodwaters emanating from the rivers Chenab, Ravi and Jhelum have submerged many villages in Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, displacing thousands of people and killing many others. Large numbers of cattle have died and crops on thousands of acres have been destroyed.

It is obvious that year after year, government authorities don’t properly build flood control dams on these rivers to prevent flood and to store water for irrigation. The situation just keeps getting worse.

The provincial and federal governments should take steps to overcome flood-related problems and provide relief to those affected by the floods. Pakistan has necessary weather radar and technical equipment to monitor floods so there should not be a reason for such kind of mismanagement.
