Time to call it off

Letter September 11, 2014
The Azadi and Revolution marches have paralysed the capital, inflecting heavy losses on the country.

WINNIPEG, CANADA: The vitriolic attack of Aitzaz Ahsan in Parliament on Chaudhry Nisar was unprecedented and regrettable. His speech was nugatory for those who are well acquainted with his past contribution in the political arena. Apart from the chief justice issue, his speech was unethical and has degraded the sanctity of Parliament.

In spite of apologies extended by the prime minister, he continued to spit out his anger that disturbed the unity of Parliament. Contrary to that, the defence minister has shown grace and dignity in disregarding Aitizaz’s allegations in Parliament for the sake of unity in dealing with crises created by Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri as well as natural calamity in the form of floods in the major part of Punjab that has displaced many causing approximately 200 deaths.

It is also disgraceful to see Imran and Qadri stuck on illegitimate resignation demand of the prime minister when their five out of six demands have been accepted by the government. The Azadi and Revolution marches have paralysed the capital, inflecting heavy losses on the country. It is time for both Imran and Qadri to show generosity and call off their sit-in considering the worst floods in the history of the country and also to let the government function properly in addressing other governance issues.
