Are we free?

Letter September 02, 2014
80 per cent of our population is deprived of basic necessities of life, such as clean drinking water. Are we free?

LARKANA: Not so long ago we celebrated our Independence Day. In a country where one can even be killed on account of following the faith of his or her choice and the killer roams with impunity. Are we free? Where more than 200 workers are burnt to death in a factory, yet no one is held accountable for the tragic incident. Are we free? Where a five-year-old is gang-raped, that can easily put Satan to shame, but the perpetrators of this crime are not brought to book. Are we free? Where due to lack of food, a mother after killing her babies commits suicide. Are we free? Where you ought to grease a hand for obtaining death certificate of your loved one. Are we free? Where denizens of one district cannot secure admission to an educational institution located in another district. Are we free? Eighty per cent of our population is deprived of basic necessities of life, such as clean drinking water. Are we free?

Yet we are free!
