KARACHI: The Scotland Yard on Wednesday arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with the murder of Dr Imran Farooq, a former leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard confirmed to The Express Tribune that the suspect was arrested from East London Wednesday morning. He is currently being questioned at a police station. Scotland Yard did not confirm the nationality of the suspect but he is said to be British Pakistani.

This suspect is the second man to be arrested in the case so far. Last June, Scotland Yard arrested the nephew of MQM chief Altaf Hussain, 52-year-old Iftikhar Hussain. He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder but is currently on bail.

Dr Imran Farooq, 50, who was once a convener of the MQM, was killed in September 2010 outside his home in Green Lane, Edgware, London. He died of multiple stab wounds and a head injury.

Earlier this year, Scotland Yard released pictures of Mohsin Ali Syed and Muhammad Kashif Khan Kamran, two Pakistanis who were in the UK in 2010 and are said to be involved in the murder. They entered the UK on student visas. The two men are reportedly said to be in Pakistan and in the custody of local officials.

A party leader told The Express Tribune that the arrested man is a member of the MQM’s UK unit. Without revealing the name of the suspect, the party leader said the MQM is cooperating with the police.
