GILGIT: A couple was arrested from Ghizer Valley in Gilgit-Baltistan on Tuesday, a day after the wife attempted suicide by jumping in a river along with three of her children. One child is presumed dead.

On Monday afternoon, 19-year-old Kashifana, a resident of Gula Pur, jumped in the Ghizer River along with her children. Locals managed to rescue Kashifana and two children, however, they were unable to save three-year-old Rizwan who was swept away by the current.

“She came to the river with her children and just jumped in,” said Tufail Ahmed, a local.

On Tuesday, police registered a case against the woman and her husband Rahmat Din and arrested them. Kashifana was shifted to a women’s police station.

According to the police, the woman’s relatives claim she had been suffering from mental illness.
