ISLAMABAD:

Members of a special parliamentary committee considered several aspects of Independence Day events planned this year during a meeting on Monday.

Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafiq spearheads the committee.

Unlike previous years, the government this year has decided to mark the independence of the country throughout the month of August. The initiative has been termed by independent political analysts as a bid to counter the opposition’s agitation plans including PTI’s proposed tsunami march towards D-Chowk scheduled for August 14.

“The federal government has decided to hold a grand Independence Day event in front of the Parliament House on August 14”, said Irfan Siddiqi, a member of committee and adviser to the prime minister.

The event will include a parade and a fly-past of F-16, a special address by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and hoisting of the national flag. Siddiqi said that this year’s Independence Day celebrations have been dedicated to the Operation Zarb-e-Azb.
