Death, famine and drought

Letter July 20, 2014
Govt needs to wake up to actually help take hapless people of Thar from a state of relief to a state of development.

ISLAMABAD: The drought and famine, which recently hit Thar, has been highly destructive. Almost 100 children under the age of five are reported to have died and a considerable number of others are likely to die in the days ahead; due to malnourishment, illness, abuse and a general lack of assistance and aid. This is not a problem only affecting Thar, but also other parts of the Sindh province as well.

The question is: why? Why, is the government and NGOs sleeping while people are on the verge of a painful death? The answer lies in the insensitivity of our rulers and insufficiency of the local administration in fulfilling their duties. The government needs to wake up from its slumber to actually help take the hapless people of Thar from a state of relief to a state of development after such disasters and to help rebuild their lives.
