Grenade attack on mosque near Peshawar

A grenade attack on a mosque during Isha prayers in Sulaiman Khel kills five people, 25 injured.

Unidentified men hurled four grenades into a mosque during Isha prayers in the Sulaiman Khel area of Badhber, located 20km from Peshawar on Friday evening.

This is the second incident of terrorism in a mosque within the space of 24 hours. The first one took place in a mosque in Darra Adam Khel which killed 50 people and injured more than 100 others.

Casualties

Express News correspondent Jehangir Shehzad reports that five people have died, while 26 people have been injured.

Nature of attack

According to the bomb disposal squad the explosion was the result of four grenades being thrown at worshippers by unknown persons.

Eye witnesses also said that there was firing outside the mosque prior to grenades being hurled inside the building. The attack left nearby buildings damaged as well.

Rescue efforts

Emergency has been declared in the Lady Reading Hospital as many of those critically wounded are being treated. According to Express News correspondent Ehtesham Bashir, three bodies have been received while 21 injured including three injured children have also been brought in so far.

Blast site

According to Jehangir Shehzad, the area where the explosion occurred is not very populated and security arrangements are usually light to non-existent in the region.

At the moment of the blast around 70 people were present in the mosque.

Humanity has no issue with any one's life style as long as they follow the principle of live and let live. People can learn it the easy way or the hard way after the thousands are put the sword of ignorance. It is their choice.

Some say these people are not Muslim, some even say they are not humans. Then some say that this is revenge for drone strikes or our partnership with US. How foolish and ignorant to make such remarks. These people who bomb us are Muslims, they are humans and they bomb others becuase the others do not follow their beliefs. Simple as that.

Narejo | 13 years ago | Reply @Humanity, it is a little disturbing that your rejoinder to another poster's simple, perhaps even heartfelt prayer eerily echos, in its intolerance to another person's opinion, the mindset of the barbarian Taliban, whom I am sure you do not concur with. That Pakistan is an Islamic state or not is no reason why it should be attacked. Not every one can live like you do. I do not think it behooves you to pass your silly holier-than-thou fatwas about what should be done or not. Unpalatable though they are, not everyone who indulges in ostentatious displays of religiosity is an animal or a terrorist so kindly the next time you lecture someone, whose lifestyle you do not subscibe with, to "evolve into humans" think again.

mehsud | 13 years ago | Reply US on one side of the coin is illuminating their long-standing friendship with Pakistan and on the other side of the coin is trying to destabilize Pakistan by carrying out such attacks through its agency identified as Black Water which was renamed as Xe. Our leadership being busy in begging and bowing before the US and international community can't do anything meaningful to stop such incidents because they were busy in war of terror which is war of US and now our leaders were saying that it is our war. once for all our leaders especially the army should leave the US and asked the Black Water to leave the country and also abstain from fight the war of US against terrorism rather should focus on its own country and fight with only the enemies of Pakistan which are not Taliban. Taliban in the near past during their rule in Afghanistan has extended every kind of help to Pakistan even the hijacked passenger aeroplane of India was landed in Kandahar and Pakistan fulfill its demands of releasing prisoners in Indian jails on the Kandahar soil which was made possible with the help of Taliban.

Pakistan continues to fail miserably, getting worse grades each time. Unfortunately, God does not hand out fake degrees. The certification of being a good Muslim must be earned by becoming a good human. How many more lives must be sacrificed, before this nation realizes that the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is destroying itself in the name of Islam? The menace can't be wished away by the crying "hai Allah - these are not Muslims".Look at the monster in the eye and find the courage to separate state and religion, if you wish to ever become a civil society. Marginalize the hate mongers. Practice the religion in your private lives however you see fit, instead of preaching it and shoving it down other throats with man made mandates. Evolve into humans!

Jawad Rana | 13 years ago | Reply So, the perpetrators of these mosque attacks are people who got enraged by the Lal Masjid operation ! As per my last count, these barabarians have attacked, demolished, descrated, and violated at least 25 mosques, with hundreds of innocent people slaughtered in them while praying (unlike Lal masjid where the occupants got 6 months to leave peacefully). Most of these attacks have been during Friday prayers, with at least one major one during taraveeh prayers, and many during janazah (funeral) prayers. In spite of the naked brutality and clear admission of responsibility by Taliban, try extracting one word of unequivocal condemnation against them from our religious political leadership, most of the mainstream parties, and most of our media ! Most will issue a very weak cliche like: 'We are against ALL violence' and will qualify their response further by including (make your pick) America, CIA, Blackwater, Israel, India, RAW, Mossad, 'bairooni haath', Non-Muslims, Non-humans etc. A sad, sad day for Pakistan.

Imran Khan | 13 years ago | Reply Just take a little cruise through all the TV channels, less than 2 hours into the blast and most of the channels have switched back to regular programming. Now remember this the next time anything happens in Lahore or Karachi, time it and see how the value of life in this pak-sir-zameen, varies by region. So the next time you look down upon provincialism, just think about this difference in the relative weights of blood.
