RAWALPINDI: A local Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat leader was shot dead on Tuesday by unidentified men in the Khayaban-e-Sir Syed area.

Izharul Haq Farooqi, vice president of the Banni Chowk Unit, died on the spot. He was returning home from Holy Family Hospital after visiting Farooq Muavia, another local ASWJ leader, who himself had been shot and seriously injured in an earlier attack.

According to sources, the killers opened indiscriminate fire on Farooqi before fleeing. Rescue 1122 shifted the body to a hospital, and doctors later handed it over it to the heirs after conducting a postmortem.

On March 12, 2014, local ASWJ leader Muhammad Abu Bakar was also shot dead by unidentified men in the same Khayaban-e-Sir Syed area, suggesting a worrying trend.

The city police officer and the superintendent of Rawal Division police were not available for their comments.

On the other hand, Inspector General of Punjab Police Mushtaq Sukhera took notice of the killing of the ASWJ leader and sought a report from the regional police officer.
