Pakistani footballs

Why can’t the Sialkot sports industry tycoons sponsor their own teams named after them and start their own leagues

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani footballs are to be used in the FIFA World Cup. I guess, as a nation, we are pretty much done with celebrating this fact. It is, however, quite a shame that the producers of world-class footballs cannot produce any top class players or teams of the game. Why can’t the Sialkot sports industry tycoons, who make billions, sponsor their own teams named after them and start their own leagues and competitions.

Besides promoting this inexpensive ‘people’s’ sport in Pakistan, it would be good business for them. When they lose in world competition once again, they would still have their football teams and a market to supply their footballs and stay on in the lucrative business. Sponsorship of their own teams would cost them a very small fraction of what they earn. A truly win-win situation!
