The momentum of reforms in K-P is in the right direction and will yield positive results in the near future.
PESHAWAR: In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government came to power with the promise of introducing reforms in all government departments in general and the police, in particular. In view of this commitment, Nasir Khan Durrani, with an immaculate police career, has been entrusted with the arduous task of reforming the police department of K-P. After the first few months of assuming the charge as IG K-P, it has been proved beyond doubt that he has an enviable ability and energy to do a superb job.
Mr Durrani introduced and implemented several policy guidelines to strengthen the police structure. Some of his major reforms include merit-based appointments of SHOs, removal of corrupt police officials and establishment of public-police complaint cells. These steps have a profound effect on the overall performance of the police in K-P. It also greatly restored public confidence in the police. Credit also goes to the PTI government for minimum political interference in police reforms.
Under the new set-up, the K-P police, when compared with other provinces’ police, have done a commendable job. With a few exceptions, the crime rate has declined. Similarly, concrete measures have been taken to remove gender discrimination in the police department. New guidelines have also been put in place to provide police protection to female victims of crimes. The IG frequently pays surprise visits to various police stations and far-flung police posts in K-P in order to assess their performance. No doubt, K-P is a terror-stricken province and there is a lot to be achieved here when it comes to maintaining law and order. However, the momentum of reforms is in the right direction and will yield positive results in the near future.
