Training for media personnel

Letter April 17, 2014
Training should involve aspect of fair, balanced, objective reporting skills which are lacking amongst most reporters.

ISLAMABAD: Over the course of decades, a perpetual state of restlessness and violence has made Pakistan a hotbed of conflict. In such a situation, we must praise the efforts of our media personnel and correspondents working to keep us informed. It is common practice all across the world by leading media hubs to train their correspondents and journalists working in the hazardous areas and teach them how to meet the challenges while reporting from a conflict zone.

Every year in Pakistan, several journalists become targets of violence in the line of duty. To avoid such unfortunate losses, journalists reporting from conflict zones require training on two grounds: these journalists are in desperate need of capacity enhancement trainings and workshops to meet the challenges of reporting from such areas and secondly, the training should also involve the aspect of fair, balanced and objective reporting skills which are lacking amongst most reporters in our country. Such training is both beneficial for media outlets and their professionals as well as to enhance the overall quality of news reporting.
