Hype over Thar

Letter April 14, 2014
My friend said that the media was unnecessarily exaggerating the problem in Thar.

ISLAMABAD: Over the past weeks, people have been talking about the Thar ‘drought’ and what I see is that the media is creating too much of a negative hype.

A friend of mine personally visited several villages in the district and distributed wheat and other necessary items among the drought victims. I asked my friend about the situation in Tharparkar and she responded that the media was unnecessarily exaggerating the problem and should instead be showing positive things so that the masses are informed about the many positive aspects of the relief work being carried out in Tharparkar.

She said that things are now better in Tharparkar as everybody has heard about the few drought victims, which made people donate a lot of goods and cash. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has himself donated a lot to Thar .

So, my concern about the Tharparkar issue is that the media has spread a lot of negative news about it when in actuality, things are under control and people are getting what they need. So, the news channels should show the peoples’ positive side who are doing so much hard work to ensure the distribution of food and cash to the drought victims of Tharparkar.
