LAHORE:

A Lahore High Court bench on Wednesday ordered the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to register vehicles with proper documentation under its amnesty scheme.

Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh passed the order on several petitions seeking clearance for vehicles.

The petitioners told the court that a division bench of the Islamabad High Court had already passed an order for registration of vehicles but provincial authorities had not registered their vehicles.

A law officer from the FBR said the board had no objection to registration of vehicles with proper documentation.

He said it was impossible to register vehicles without documentation.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government had approved the amnesty scheme allowing owners to register cars after paying concessional duty and taxes.

Later, the FBR had issued a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) introducing the amnesty scheme.

However, a single bench of the Islamabad High Court had declared it illegal and observed that the scheme was launched to favour a “certain group.”

Later a division bench of the IHC on November 11, 2013 set aside the order and allowed registration of the cars.
