The LUMS bubble (II)

Letter March 20, 2014
It was refreshing, heartening to read someone actually visited LUMS, un-’Corked’ its artificially preserved bubble.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Chris Cork’s article, “The LUMS bubble”, which appeared on March 20. In recent months, many contradictory articles have appeared, praising and bashing the achievements of our higher educational institutions. A lot of the praising was a sort of mutual self-praise by the Higher Education Commission for itself and its ‘brotherly’ organisations, ones that the commission holds dear to itself and rations the most amount of funds to.

It was both refreshing and heartening to read that someone had actually visited the LUMS campus and observed LUMS students and, above all, had un-’Corked’ its artificially preserved bubble and found that it is somewhat ‘corked’. Sadly, the next generation continues to be taught and prepared for industry by generations of academics, aged anywhere between 24 to 70 years, who have never worked a single day of their life in industry, ill-serving their ‘hatchlings’ and the socioeconomic development of the nation. Thank you for ‘uncorking’ the LUMS bubble Mr Cork.
