As many as 120 students from Lahore have secured top positions in the Cambridge International Exams 2013. The figure last year had been 94.
As many as 200,000 students had appeared in the exams.
The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards, released by the Cambridge International Examinations, last week, says 29 of these students achieved highest scores in a particular subject in Pakistan while another 25 topped world over.
A statement by the CIE reads, “Winning learners out-performed thousands of candidates worldwide who sat examinations in Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge International AS Level and Cambridge International A Level.”
Top in the world
As many as 23 students stood first in economics, business studies, commerce, environmental management, history, English literature in the June and November Cambridge O level exams.
As many as four students topped in the world in additional mathematics from the Lahore Grammar Schools, the LACAS and the Chenab College, Jhang. Another five students topped in Urdu.
In November, one student topped world over in mathematics. Four students secured highest marks in the world in chemistry, literature, applied ICT and Islamic studies in June-November exams.
Toppers in Pakistan
As many as 14 students topped in Pakistan in Pakistan studies, art, food and nutrition, commerce, physics and biology.
One student topped in Pakistan in information and communication technology in IGCSE.
As many as 13 students topped in Pakistan from Lahore in A levels, of which eight had appeared in June and five in November exams.
As many as 18 students topped in Lahore in various subjects in O levels. Another four topped the Cambridge IGCSE examinations.
Six students topped in Lahore in the AS level examination while 17 students topped in the same category in various subjects in the A level Cambridge examinations.
Proud moments
Bagging the Best Across Seven Cambridge O Levels Award, Adeel Mahmood of the Lahore College of Arts and Sciences (LACAS) stood first in both Pakistan in the O level exam held in June.
He also topped in the world in additional mathematics.
LACAS Vice Principal Khalid Saifur said, he was proud that students from the institution continued to secure top positions.
“Pakistani students are hard working. Private schools are performing at par with global standards,” he said.
Adeel Mahmood and Usama Mumtaz Ali, who topped in Lahore in English, would be awarded in a special ceremony scheduled in April.
Cathedral School Vice Principal Murad Lal said his students had secured top positions since 2005.
This year, Noorul Huda topped in Lahore in religious studies.
Students of the Beaconhouse School System have managed to bag 16 top positions and awards. Of these, 12 students gave the AS and A Level examinations while four gave the O level and the IGCSE examinations.
Shirmeen Ali of the career counseling section of the Beaconhouse Liberty Campus said the institution was committed to offering students right kind of counselling.
She said students were open to experiments with new areas and wanted to pursue a wide variety of subjects including thinking skills and human and social biology.
CIE Country Director Uzma Yousuf Zaka said the result reflected a positive trend in the performance of students of Lahore.
Zaka said students in Cambridge schools across Pakistan performed consistently well.
Zaka said mathematics, science and English were the most popular subjects.
