In Sindhi, the line would be “Mari weenda soon, Sindh na deenda soon.”
ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Saroop Ijaz’s article titled “From the ruins” (February 9). Mr Ijaz has written a well-intended piece, but he has glossed over certain facts. I would like to point out that “Marsoon Marsoon Sindh na daisun”, is not Sindhi at all. It is the ‘Barochki’ language, spoken mainly by Zardaris and Jatois. In Sindhi, the line would be “Mari weenda soon, Sindh na deenda soon.”
Moreover, Hosh Mohammad Sheedi was not a local, unlike what the article mentions. He was a Nigerian topchi (artillery expert), who was imported by the Talpurs.
However, I completely agree with Mr Ijaz when he says that we should get down from our Arabian high horses and embrace our true identities, that of people of the Indus, which in many cases, may make some of us Dravadians, contrary to the Aryan myth we would like to buy into. And yes, Porus was a greater man than Alexander as he frustrated the Macedonian’s ambition. Yet, we name our sons Sikander, but never Porus.
