Role of women

Letter January 29, 2014
Fact is that women are usually absent from streets of small cities because they are often not allowed out of homes.

NIDDERAU, GERMANY: This is with reference to the article by Muhammad Hamid Zaman “Women, higher education and leadership” (January 28). The piece presents some valid points. The bit about Pakistan having been fortunate to have women leaders is only part of the story. The fact is that women are usually absent from the streets of small cities because they are often not allowed out of their homes.

The struggle for women’s emancipation should start at the grass roots to change this state of affairs. Women should have the right to decide what they want to do in life. It is time to introduce a quota system in the job market for women so that they become more visible in public life. This should include not only the staff in offices, but also in small shops in high streets.
